Yellow Fluid Filled Blisters When First Bracing, After Casting for Clubfoot

Occasionally parents report strange fluid filled blisters shortly after beginning bracing after Ponseti Method Casting.

These blisters are NOT your fault, and they are not the fault of the brace/shoe. These things just freakin appear. And they look super scary.

They appear similar to a chemical burn, or a sunburn gone out of control, or a regular burn from heat where the fluid filled blister forms. These blisters can be small and singular, or they might be multiple and in a line outside of the strap lines from the shoe. They might be inside the straps and random. Or they could even blow up in a very large way that seems very intense.

Fortunately these blisters seem to re-absorb and dry up swiftly. They do not affect any lower layers of skin, and once dried up they will sort of dry/scab up and fall off in a week or so. Keeping them from sticking to the socks is the most important thing to do while they work on disappearing. It's important to keep on bracing, unless these are under the straps and bracing would aggravate the blisters specifically. Make sure to evaluate whether or not bracing will work with these blisters, and if there will be aggravation, do not add more and create a sore that doesn't need to be created. Not bracing is warranted in any situation where the blister is large and under a pressure point in the shoe. Do not squash down the straps on a fluid filled blister. Ever. If the blister is otherwise under any part of the shoe, evaluate the pressure and do not brace if bracing pops the blister.
