Holding and Handling a Baby with Ponseti Method Clubfoot Casts

Holding a Baby with Ponseti Method Clubfoot Casts.

You just got home with your baby from the first casting session, and every thing is new and weird and HEAVY! Those legs just flop around and seem so unwieldy. How can diapers be changed with these things? How do I hold my baby while the heavy casts are on? Here's some ideas and tips from parents world wide.

Firstly, of course you don't want baby's legs to dangle unsupported. But as long as the casts are done properly, gravity has no effect on whether or not they slip. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise. Slipped casts are always the fault of the provider who put them on. Not gravity. Proper Ponseti Method casts are made from plaster and are bent at the knee at least 90 degrees, they are high all the way to the groin, and well molded around the foot.

You can use blankets or towels or small pillows to help support baby's casts. When lying down and sleeping, elevating the casts can help with any discomfort. While in the carseat, some support may also be helpful.
